In total, the cost of running the two sides of our operation - the homes and welfare - is in the region of £5m a year. Of the money we receive each year, under half comes from central and local government sources to fund the treatment that about 70% of our veterans receive in the homes. This still leaves a significant shortfall in the cost of running the homes which has to be met through public appeals (legacies and donations) although the three Service Benevolent funds help us to the best of their ability.
As for the welfare side of our activities, this is entirely dependent on the Society's fund raising efforts. Because no Government subsidies of any kind are available for this important aspect of our work, we have to meet the costs of thousands of welfare visits each year to our veterans homes.
We have to keep an extremely tight reign on our administrative costs, which, we are proud to say, are very low indeed compared with most other charities. By radical reorganisation and 'good housekeeping', we have now reduced them to under 5% of our total spending. The other 95% goes directly to those we intend to benefit.
There are many ways in which you can support the Society in providing rehabilitative treatment for ex-service men and women. Find out how you can support our work here.
