What we do

Carer Support Groups – reducing isolation

Many Veterans’ problems can remain masked for years, and their families may try to deal with matters at home. Experiencing trauma affects relationships.  Partners sometimes feel they are walking on eggshells and tend to be in the front line for reactions.

Often it is the partner who acts as a buffer between the Veteran and the world.  Circumstances can lead to social isolation as friends fall away.

Combat Stress has therefore established a number of Carer Support Groups in: Belfast, Ayr, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Carlisle, Newcastle, Shropshire and Surrey.

The groups are open to husbands, wives and partners of Veterans under our care.  Veterans do not attend themselves.

The Groups aim to:

  • Educate the member about PTSD and its impact on relationships and family life.
  • Provide a forum for support and information sharing.
  • Increase insight and coping strategies.
  • Make friends and create a lifeline.
  • Create some time for yourself.

"I first went to the group to support my husband. The second time I burst into tears and I knew I needed to do this for me."
