The treatments that we use

The treatment we offer at Combat Stress is in line with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Treatment Guidelines and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Treatment Guidelines. Combat Stress is also part of the UK Trauma Group.

Our treatment programmes 

Veterans who come to Combat Stress will be offered evidence-based treatment programmes, designed to address mental health difficulties that are often complicated and long-standing. These are the stages that your treatment may progress through:  

Stabilisation

This will include measures to engage you in treatment such as:

  • Psycho-education (see below)
  • A review of your medication and prescription of correct medication
  • In some cases, an initial engagement with Art Therapy
  • Mindfulness training.



Psycho-education

This helps patients understand their symptoms and covers issues such as:

  • The impact of traumatic events
  • The effects of trauma on the family
  • Understanding grief and loss
  • Surviving guilt
  • Adjusting back to civilian life
  • Addictive Behaviours
  • Depression Management
  • Sleep Hygiene

 

Trauma-focused therapy

This includes:

 

 Coping skills training

  • Mindfulness training
  • Anxiety Management
  • Anger Management
  • Grounding Techniques.



Activities-based rehabilitation

  • Physical Exercise and Outdoor Pursuits
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Structured Psychosocial Activities.
