Channing's story

Channing's story

Channing Day was killed in Afghanistan in October 2012 while on patrol in Helmand Province. A serving medic in 3 Medical Regiment, Channing was just 25 years old when she died. Her family wanted to remember Channing so asked for donations to Combat Stress instead of flowers at her funeral. Since then, they’ve continued to fundraise for Combat Stress taking part in lots of different activities so that her memory lives on and the money raised provides vital services to veterans.

We have hung a plaque in the memorial garden at our Tyrwhitt House treatment centre, in memory of Channing, to recognise the incredible support of her friends and family who continue to remember her by fundraising for Combat Stress.

Incredible challenges and events

Here are just some examples of the incredible challenges and events Channing’s family and friends have taken part in to raise money for Combat Stress.

  • In November 2012, Channing’s friend Jody Mardling, along with the 73 Armoured Engineer Squadron and 21 Engineer Regiment all took part in the Boars Insanity Challenge, completing a gruelling 60-day workout in the amazing time of just 50 hours, raising almost £5,000.
  • In March 2013, Major Neill Bramble organised the Camp Souter Half Marathon in Kabul, Afghanistan, which saw 62 personnel running at 2,000m above sea level and raised almost £4,000.
  • Nadine Livingstone participated in the Belfast Marathon in May 2013; the Comber Young Men Football Club held a charity night that raised £600, and there have been many other fundraising events including a charity football match.
  • Channing’s grandfather Raymond has now raised an incredible amount, well over £13,000. Raymond has raised the funds through a variety of events including the sale of special badges. If you’d like to buy a badges please email Raymond.
