Co-founder of Help for Heroes, friend to Combat Stress

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bryn Parry CBE, co-founder of Help for Heroes, who dedicated his life to supporting veterans and their families, and was instrumental in changing the way the nation regards both military service and wounded veterans.

Bryn, who served in the Royal Green Jackets, and his wife Emma set up the charity in 2007 after a visit to a hospital where wounded veterans were being treated upon returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Since then, Combat Stress and Help for Heroes have worked closely to support veterans in need.

Upon visiting Tyrwhitt House, our specialist hub in Surrey, Bryn met his former Platoon Sergeant, who was undergoing treatment, something that deeply resonated with him and even further persuaded him to support our work. We received substantial financial support in the form of a £3.5m grant for the much-needed expansion, modernisation and reorganisation of Tyrwhitt House, including the creation of the aptly named ‘Help for Heroes’ wing.

To date, this incredible generosity has also included a further £4m, which has been vital in helping us to continue providing our services.

Jeff Harrison, Chief Executive of Combat Stress, said: “Bryn’s dedication to supporting the veteran community is inspirational and his legacy is profound.

“The impact of the support he readily and proudly gave to Combat Stress, to allow us to better treat veterans with complex mental health problems, cannot be understated.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones, and all those affected, at this difficult time”.
